Hydro Turbines
The Problem
The internal surface of this hydro turbine presented an important loss of metal which ultimately led to a hole.
The Solution
After preparing the surface by grit blasting, the hydraulic profile of the equipment was rebuilt from the inside using Belzona 1311. Two coats of Belzona 1331 were then applied to provide a long-term protection against erosion and corrosion. On the outside of the equipment, patches of SuperWrap were used to recover the mechanical strength of the equipment. The customer was really happy with this quick application which only took 4.5 days.

Fan Blades
The Problem
The asset had suffered from Erosion on the Wind turbine blades leading edges. This erosion, over time, can lead to a drop in the aerodynamics which leads to a reduction in the turbine energy output. This can account for anything from 5-20% loss in asset efficiency annually. Because of the cooler climate, traditional LEP coatings would have struggled to cure in ambient conditions.
The Solution
The blades were coated on the turbine at the operation site. The pitting and loss of surface on the leading edge was resurfaced with a filler product and rebuilt to dimensions. The surface area was sanded down with a mechanical sander and cleaned with a rag and non-residual solvent cleaner. One coat of Belzona 5721 at 20 mils (508µm) was applied.

Cooling Tower Outlets
The Problem
Sea water used as coolant in open cooling system in coal fired power station. Steel cooling water outlets below the condenser. The existing rubber lining had reached its end of life. The existing rubber was no longer providing the steel pipes with protection from erosion/corrosion. The rubber needed to be removed to allow for application of Belzona 1321.
The Solution
The rubber was stripped. The steel was grit blasted and then washed to removed all salts. The steel was blasted back to ISO 8501 SA 2 1/2 and Belzona 1321 was applied in two coats. Belzona 1321 is substantially cheaper than rubber lining. Belzona 1321 had been used in the past in that station to re-line pipe work and equipment that had been previously rubber lined.

Cooling Tower Outlets
The Problem
A combination of de-Alumininification over the surface of the impeller and cavitation at root of the vanes was causing a significant reduction in the efficiency of this pump.
The Solution
Belzona 1121 used to smooth the surface prior to application of Belzona 1341 system. Belzona 2141 was then applied 8″ on either side of the vanes to protect from cavitation. The cost of labor and product was much lower than the cost to replace the impeller. From current draw, the application has also increased the efficiency of the pump, but no formal efficiency increase have been calculated.
